Early Antique Oak Joint Stool Side Table with Drawer, c.1680–1750

A particularly characterful early oak joint stool / low side table, likely dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, circa 1680–1750.

Constructed from substantial solid oak, the piece has a wonderfully heavy and robust feel for its compact size. Traditional construction details include a pegged top and nailed drawer construction, both consistent with early vernacular furniture-making methods.

The single drawer features attractive carved arcaded decoration to the front with a turned wooden knob, while the base is supported by substantial baluster-turned legs joined by low stretchers. The thick oak top has developed beautifully softened edges and extensive surface wear through long use.

The colour and patina are particularly appealing, with deep brown tones, lighter rubbed areas, knocks, scratches and irregular wear throughout. These marks have accumulated naturally over many years and are an important part of the piece’s character.

Its compact proportions make it highly versatile today. It would work beautifully as a low side table beside an armchair, a small bedside table, lamp table or decorative occasional table.

An atmospheric piece of early English oak furniture with excellent surface, honest age and strong decorative presence.

Very Good Original Condition

The oak displays a rich and well-developed patina with scratches, knocks, rubbed edges, old marks, colour variation and areas of surface wear throughout. The top shows particularly attractive wear, including softened edges, surface abrasion and lighter areas where the oak has naturally worn through long use.

Further marks and wear are visible to the turned legs, stretchers and drawer front. The drawer retains traditional nailed construction and operates as expected for its age.

No attempt has been made to remove or disguise the accumulated character of the surface.
