19th Century French Vendange Table

A wonderfully characterful 19th-century French Vendange table, originally designed for use during the grape harvest and distinguished by its practical folding construction.

The generously proportioned oval top is formed from broad timber boards and has developed a beautifully pale, timeworn surface through generations of use. Knots, historic marks, tonal variation and areas of wear remain visible throughout, giving the table the wonderfully relaxed character associated with genuine French provincial furniture.

The top is supported by a simple trestle-style timber base with shaped feet, angled braces and a central stretcher. One of the most appealing features of a traditional Vendange table is its ability to fold: the top pivots into an upright position, considerably reducing the table's footprint when not required.

At 115cm wide, this is a particularly useful size. Large enough to work as an intimate dining or kitchen table, yet compact enough for smaller kitchens, breakfast areas and open-plan spaces.

Its primitive construction and beautifully worn surface give it a sculptural quality that works particularly well against cleaner contemporary interiors as well as traditional country settings.

Good Original Condition

The tabletop displays numerous historic marks, scratches, stains, colour variation, surface wear and natural imperfections. The base similarly shows extensive age-related wear, particularly around the feet and lower sections, including old losses, knocks and evidence of historic use.
These characteristics form an important part of the table's appearance and have deliberately been retained rather than restored away.

Pair with simple antique Windsor, ladder-back or rush-seated chairs for a relaxed European farmhouse feel. In a more contemporary setting, the table works beautifully against limewashed plaster, natural stone flooring and understated linen upholstery, where the aged timber introduces warmth and texture.
Keep the tabletop styling deliberately simple — a large piece of studio pottery, an antique earthenware vessel filled with olive branches or a collection of handmade ceramics will complement the surface without concealing its wonderful patina.
When folded upright, the table also becomes an attractive architectural object in its own right and is particularly useful where space is limited.
