19th Century Victorian Pine Chest of Drawers

A handsome 19th-century English pine chest of drawers dating to the Victorian period, circa 1860–1880.

Constructed in solid pine, the chest features the classic arrangement of two short drawers over three full-width drawers, offering generous and practical storage. The warm honey-toned surface has developed a beautifully aged patina, with natural variation, knocks, scratches and wear accumulated through many years of use.

The chest retains traditional turned wooden drawer knobs, brass escutcheons and internal drawer locks, while the base is finished with a gently shaped apron and substantial turned feet. Dovetailed drawer construction and the wide boarded back further reflect traditional period cabinetmaking.

Its relatively shallow depth makes it particularly versatile, providing excellent storage without projecting too far into a room. The warm pine colouring works especially well in relaxed country interiors, Georgian and Victorian homes, as well as more contemporary schemes where antique furniture is used to introduce warmth and texture.

Good Original Condition

The chest displays scratches, knocks, small marks, surface wear and variations in colour consistent with its age and many years of use. There is visible wear to the edges and top, together with darker areas around the drawer knobs and occasional minor losses and imperfections to the timber.

The turned feet also show expected wear and marking.

These characteristics form an important part of the chest's appearance and antique patina rather than detracting from it.

The drawers are structurally sound, although—as with most antique furniture—some minor movement and variation in drawer action should be expected.
