Antique Arts & Crafts Walnut & Rush Two-Seater Settee, c.1900

A beautifully understated English Arts & Crafts two-seater settee, dating to circa 1900 and constructed from solid walnut with a traditional hand-woven rush seat.

The settee has a wonderfully restrained design, with tall slender rear uprights framing two broad, gently shaped horizontal back rails. Particularly attractive are the elegantly sculpted arms, each formed with a subtle sweeping profile that gives the otherwise simple construction a distinctive architectural quality.

Traditional craftsmanship is evident throughout. The walnut frame is predominantly mortise-and-tenon constructed, with visible pegged joints, while the rush is woven directly around the seat rails to create a generous and surprisingly compact two-person seat.

The walnut has developed a lovely mellow colour and naturally aged surface, retaining the knocks, marks, variations in tone and softened edges accumulated through more than a century of use.

At just 95cm wide, this is an unusually useful size. It has the presence of an Arts & Crafts settle without the substantial proportions normally associated with one, making it particularly suited to a hallway, bedroom, fireside, landing or smaller living space.

A wonderfully honest piece of English Arts & Crafts furniture combining traditional construction, beautiful proportions and the simplicity of design for which the movement is so admired.

Very Good Original Condition

The walnut frame displays a characterful aged surface with historic knocks, scratches, small marks, variations in colour and areas of surface wear throughout. There is age-related movement and minor opening around some joints, together with evidence of historic use and maintenance, all contributing to the character of the piece.

The rush seat remains usable and presents attractively, showing age-related colour variation, wear and occasional broken or loose fibres. We cannot confirm whether the existing rush is original to the frame and it may have been renewed during the settee's lifetime.

Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description. We deliberately retain the natural patina and evidence of age found on our antique furniture rather than over-restoring it.

The simplicity of this settee makes it particularly effective when contrasted with a contemporary interior. Style against warm limewashed plaster with limestone or aged timber flooring, allowing the mellow walnut and natural rush to provide warmth and texture.

Its compact proportions make it particularly attractive as a hallway or boot-room bench, at the end of a bed, beneath a window or as occasional seating in a living room. A single antique textile or neutral linen cushion would complement the rush without disguising the elegant frame.
