Antique Cast Iron Rococo Revival Garden Planter, c.1900

A wonderfully decorative antique cast iron garden planter dating from around the turn of the 20th century, with elaborate Rococo Revival ornament and a beautifully weathered surface.

The substantial rectangular jardinière is richly cast with scrolling foliage, floral motifs and classical detailing, with a flared upper rim and decorative feet. Years of outdoor use have created an especially attractive surface, with worn pale paint, areas of oxidation and naturally developed green weathering giving the planter the character associated with established country gardens.

The interior remains pleasingly untouched, displaying extensive oxidation and evidence of its long history as a working garden planter.

At 79cm wide, it is large enough to create a strong architectural feature without being overwhelmingly large. It would work particularly well planted generously with lavender, trailing foliage or seasonal flowers and positioned against an old brick or stone wall, on a terrace, or beside an entrance.

A highly decorative piece of antique garden ornament that is equally appealing left empty, allowing the elaborate casting and aged surface to remain visible.

Very Good Original Condition

The exterior displays extensive wear to the historic painted finish, surface oxidation, discolouration, moss/lichen and natural weathering, all of which contribute significantly to its character.
The interior has substantial surface rust and oxidation from previous planting and exposure to moisture.
