Antique French Cottage Oil Painting, Signed Valot, Dated 1921

An atmospheric French oil painting depicting a group of thatched stone cottages beneath a dramatic, cloud-filled sky. Small figures and an animal bring life to the rural scene, while muted blue-grey, earthy brown and warm cream tones give the composition a quiet, understated character.

Expressive brushwork adds texture to the cottages and sky, complemented by a broad gilt frame with a pale inner slip. Signed in red to the lower right, with a signature reading “Valot” and the date 1921. The artist’s full identity has not been confirmed.

The reverse retains a French framing label from Papeterie Générale in Saint-Étienne. The scene evokes the rural architecture of Brittany, although its precise location is unknown.

Good Original Condition

Age-related craquelure is visible across the painted surface, together with scattered marks and surface irregularities. The gilt frame shows wear, scratches and small chips, with areas of the underlying finish exposed. The protective backing on the reverse has tears and losses.
