Antique French Glazed Earthenware Chevrette Pot, c.1880–1920

A characterful antique French earthenware chevrette pot, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century.

Wheel-thrown from warm red terracotta, the vessel has a wonderfully rounded form topped by a substantial integral basket handle. The upper section is partially glazed in rich ochre and brown tones, with distinctive dark green and almost black speckling around the shoulder. Irregular glaze runs, firing marks and areas of exposed terracotta give the piece a particularly tactile, time-worn surface.

Originally a practical piece of rural pottery, vessels of this form were traditionally used for storing and carrying liquids such as water, wine or oil. 

Now especially appealing as a sculptural decorative object, its earthy colouring, substantial handle and beautifully aged surface make it an atmospheric piece of European vernacular pottery.

Good Original Condition

There are areas of glaze loss, scratches, surface abrasions, firing irregularities, small knocks and general wear throughout. The exposed terracotta has developed an attractive softly weathered surface.

These imperfections form an important part of the character and history of the piece and have intentionally been left unrestored.
