Antique Industrial Wooden Storage Chest / Trunk – R. Morton & Co, Burton-on-Trent
A wonderfully evocative early 20th-century industrial tool chest bearing the original R. Morton & Co Ltd, Burton-on-Trent stencil.
Constructed from substantial timber with heavy iron fittings, reinforced corners and carrying handles, the chest retains an exceptional time-worn surface developed through decades of genuine working use. The hinged lid opens to reveal a capacious interior together with its original removable divided wooden tool tray.
The chest was produced for Robert Morton & Co Ltd of Trent Works, Burton-on-Trent, an important British brewery-engineering company whose history can be traced to around 1880. The firm specialised in equipment for breweries and distilleries and advertised itself as capable of supplying and erecting complete breweries.
The construction, carrying handles and removable internal tray strongly suggest that this was a working tool or equipment chest, potentially used by the company's engineers or fitters. While its precise original use cannot currently be documented, its prominent company stencil provides a fascinating direct connection with Burton-on-Trent's internationally important brewing and engineering history.
Today it makes an outstanding piece of functional industrial furniture — ideal as a characterful coffee table, blanket chest or substantial storage piece.
