Antique Victorian Pine Two-Door Wardrobe with Drawer – c.1870–1890

A handsome late 19th century pine wardrobe with a wonderfully honest, timeworn surface and practical knock-down construction.

Dating to approximately c.1870–1890, this substantial two-door wardrobe is made in solid pine and retains a wealth of character throughout, including old iron fittings, traditional framed and panelled doors, a deep moulded cornice and a full-width lower drawer.

The pale natural finish gives the piece a warm, understated appearance and allows the grain, knots, historic wear and old insect marks to remain visible. Its proportions are generous without being overly deep, making it suitable for both period and contemporary interiors.

A particularly interesting feature is the traditional construction. The wardrobe separates into two sections and is secured together using two wooden wedges rather than modern fixings. This was a practical method used on larger pieces of furniture to make them easier to transport through narrow doorways and staircases, and it remains extremely useful today.

Internally, the wardrobe is simply and robustly constructed with wide pine boards and a hanging rail. The lower drawer provides additional storage for folded clothing, bedding or accessories.

A strong decorative and functional piece with plenty of authentic age and character.

Very Good Original Condition

The wardrobe has a heavily timeworn surface with numerous marks, knocks, abrasions and areas of historic insect activity throughout. These old flight holes contribute significantly to the character of the piece.

There is wear to the cornice, edges and lower mouldings, together with age-related movement and minor separation in places. The iron fittings show expected surface oxidation and wear.

The wardrobe appears to have been stripped at some point in its life, giving it its current pale natural pine finish.

The hanging rail may be a later addition or replacement.

As with many antique pine pieces, historic woodworm activity is visible. We would recommend routine preventative treatment if required.

Structurally, the wardrobe remains substantial and functional. Its knocks, marks, old repairs and irregularities are considered part of its antique character rather than defects.

The relatively shallow depth also makes it a practical option where a full-size modern wardrobe may feel too bulky.
