Gordon Russell Helix Sideboard by David Booth & Judith Ledeboer, 1950s
A striking example of British mid-century design, this original Gordon Russell Helix sideboard was designed by David Booth and Judith Ledeboer for Gordon Russell of Broadway, Worcestershire, during the early 1950s.
Defined by its beautifully distinctive geometric decoration, the cabinet features an elegant repeating helix pattern across its two doors. Delicate, contrasting lines weave across the richly figured wood veneer, creating a rhythmic design that is both architectural and wonderfully decorative.
The clean rectangular silhouette is complemented by a beautifully finished top, subtly tapered legs and original metal ring handles. Opening the double doors reveals a thoughtfully arranged interior, incorporating a full-width shelf, generous storage space and a fitted cutlery drawer with individual compartments.
The sideboard retains its original brass 'Russell of Broadway' manufacturer's plaque, confirming its connection to one of Britain's most influential twentieth-century furniture makers.
Designed during a remarkable period of British creativity, the Helix sideboard is closely associated with the 1951 Festival of Britain, an event celebrating innovative design, craftsmanship and the optimism of post-war Britain.
Combining functional storage with exceptional decorative character, this is a highly versatile piece that would sit beautifully within both contemporary and traditional interiors.
A wonderful opportunity to own a distinctive example of British modernist furniture, celebrated for its innovative design and enduring appeal.
