Hugo Backmansson — Marrakech Oil Portrait, 1920
The young sitter is depicted wearing a colourful headwrap and a white outer garment over vivid yellow-green clothing. A dark background brings the face forward, with warm highlights and softly worked shadows creating an intimate, engaging study. Loose, textured brushwork captures the folds of the clothing, while blue, ochre and red accents animate the headwrap.
Painted in oil on board and presented in a substantial gilt-finished frame, decorated with classical borders and leaf motifs. A dark inner slip complements the background, while the aged gilding gives the portrait a rich architectural surround.
Hugo Backmansson (1860–1953) was a Finnish painter whose work included portraits and scenes of North African life. His Moroccan paintings capture the people and streets of Marrakech and Tangier through expressive brushwork and vibrant colour. This portrait, signed and dated Marrakech 1920, reflects that interest in individual character and the richness of local dress.
A characterful early 20th-century painting with a strong decorative presence, combining a quietly observed face with confident passages of colour.
