Late 17th Century Flemish Baroque Oak Tavern Table

An exceptionally characterful late 17th-century Flemish Baroque oak tavern table, retaining its original hand-crafted base. Dating from around 1680–1700, this handsome table displays the robust craftsmanship and sculptural form associated with Flemish country furniture of the Baroque period.

The table stands on beautifully turned front supports united by a substantial pegged stretcher terminating in elegant carved horn-shaped ends—a distinctive feature found on a small number of surviving Flemish tavern and hunt tables. The heavy shoe feet exhibit centuries of honest wear, while the hand-cut mortise and tenon construction remains remarkably solid.

At some point in its long history the original top has been sympathetically replaced with an antique solid oak plank top, almost certainly during the 18th or 19th century. This was a common period repair for furniture subjected to generations of everyday use and allows the table to remain both highly practical and historically honest.

Its compact proportions make it particularly versatile within modern interiors, functioning beautifully as a hall table, lamp table, sofa table or occasional table whilst retaining over three centuries of history and patina.

Very Good Original Condition

The table is in good antique condition, displaying the expected wear and character acquired over more than 300 years of use.

The original Flemish oak base remains structurally sound with traditional pegged mortise and tenon construction. The heavy shoe feet exhibit historic abrasion and wear consistent with age, while the carved stretcher terminals retain crisp definition despite centuries of use.

The solid oak top is a later historic replacement, likely dating from the 18th or 19th century, and has aged sympathetically alongside the original base. It displays a rich colour, attractive grain, minor historic marks, surface wear and age-related imperfections that enhance the table's authentic character.
