Late 19th Century Elm & Beech High-Back Windsor Armchair

A handsome late 19th century English high-back Windsor armchair, dating to approximately 1880–1900.

The chair has a wonderfully imposing silhouette, with its unusually tall back formed from seven gently curved vertical splats beneath a broad shaped crest rail. Sweeping arms are supported on turned uprights, while the deeply shaped saddle seat displays particularly attractive grain and figuring.

The seat appears to be elm, with the turned legs, arm supports and back components most likely constructed from beech and/or ash, traditionally stained to create the chair's rich dark finish.

The turned legs are joined by stretchers for strength, while the generous rake of the back makes this a particularly comfortable and characterful example.

What really sets this chair apart is its scale. Standing 109.5 cm high, it has significantly more presence than a standard dining Windsor and works extremely well as a standalone occasional chair, fireside chair or statement piece.

The surface has developed a beautiful, naturally aged patina, with areas of rubbing and lighter timber showing through particularly around the arms, legs and crest rail. These marks tell the story of a chair that has clearly been used and enjoyed for many generations.

A strong piece of traditional English country furniture with excellent decorative appeal.

Very Good Original Condition

There is surface wear, rubbing, scratches and loss of finish throughout, with areas of lighter timber showing through particularly to the arms, legs, stretchers, back splats and crest rail.

The upper crest rail has visible marks and historic surface wear, while the arms show particularly attractive rubbing from prolonged use.

The seat retains a beautifully aged surface with pronounced grain and general wear.

These signs of age have deliberately been retained and form an important part of the chair's character and patina.

The chair presents very well and remains a highly decorative and usable piece of antique furniture.

The dark aged timber contrasts especially well with warm limestone, natural linen, antique oak and softly textured neutral interiors.
