Late 19th-Century Pine Storage Chest, c.1880

A wonderfully characterful late 19th-century pine storage chest, dating to around 1880–1900.

Constructed from wide solid pine boards, the chest has a beautifully mellow honey-coloured surface developed through generations of use. Its simple utilitarian construction is complemented by two substantial surface-mounted iron hinges, visible traditional fixings and a gently rounded moulded edge around the hinged lid.

Opening the lid reveals a generous storage compartment with a small raised internal shelf or till to the rear. The underside of the lid retains its simple strengthening battens, further emphasising the chest's practical, vernacular construction.

The pine carries an abundance of historic marks, scratches, knocks, colour variation and wear, giving the piece the wonderfully relaxed character associated with genuinely old country furniture.

At only 65 cm wide, its compact proportions make it particularly versatile. It could be used traditionally as a storage or blanket chest, but works equally well as a bedside piece, side table, occasional table or useful hallway storage.

Good Original Condition

The pine displays numerous historic scratches, knocks, dents, marks, stains and areas of colour variation throughout. There is natural shrinkage and movement between some of the boards together with expected wear around the edges and base.

The iron hinges show surface oxidation and age-related patination.

There are old fixing marks and evidence of previous use throughout. These characteristics are considered part of the history and appeal of the piece rather than defects.

Its warm aged pine works particularly well against limewashed plaster, natural stone and neutral textiles.

Use beside a bed in place of a conventional bedside table, beside a linen sofa as a characterful side table, or in an entrance hall for practical concealed storage. The relatively compact proportions also make it easy to incorporate into smaller interiors.

Pair with handmade ceramics, vintage books, linen and warm natural materials while allowing the aged pine surface and ironwork to remain the focus.
