Late Victorian Dome-Top Travelling Trunk with Original Interior Tray, c.1890

A wonderfully characterful late Victorian travelling trunk, dating to approximately 1890, retaining a wealth of original detail and a beautifully timeworn surface.

Constructed around a timber carcass, the trunk features a distinctive domed lid with contrasting timber strengthening bands, studded metalwork and blackened protective edging and corners. The rich brown exterior has developed considerable wear and patina through use, giving the piece the unmistakable character of genuine antique travelling luggage.

Particularly appealing is the original “PARSONS” stencilling to the front and side of the trunk, almost certainly relating to a previous owner and providing a tangible connection with the piece's travelling past.

The front retains its central lock plate and two decorative clasps, while carrying handles are positioned at the sides. Please note, the trunk does not lock.

Opening the hinged lid reveals a remarkably characterful interior with its removable lift-out tray still present. Decorative floral paper trim survives around the inside of the lid, alongside the aged original lining.

Now well suited to contemporary interiors, this would make an excellent blanket chest, bedroom storage trunk or statement piece at the end of a bed. Its untouched appearance also makes it particularly effective simply as a decorative antique object.

Good Original Condition

The exterior displays extensive surface wear, scuffs, scratches, marks and areas of loss and deterioration to the original covering. There is wear and oxidation to the metal fittings and considerable age-related variation throughout the timber and exterior surfaces.
The rear covering is particularly timeworn, with creasing, losses, old repairs and unevenness visible.
Internally, the original lining shows considerable age-related deterioration, including areas of lifting, tearing, cracking and loss. The removable interior tray also displays wear, marks and losses consistent with age and use.
