Victorian Pine Pedestal Desk with Raised Gallery, c.1880
A wonderfully characterful Victorian pine pedestal desk dating to the late 19th century, circa 1870–1890.
Constructed in solid pine, the desk has developed a beautiful warm honey colour with the knocks, marks and variations in tone that come from well over a century of use. Its generous arrangement of drawers provides excellent storage, while the central kneehole creates a practical working space.
Across the top are three drawers, with further graduated drawers arranged within the two pedestal sections. Traditional turned wooden knobs and small key escutcheons complement the simple utilitarian construction.
The writing surface is finished with a low 6.5 cm raised gallery/upstand, giving the desk an attractive architectural profile while helping distinguish it from more conventional flat-topped pedestal desks.
At only 53 cm deep and 120 cm wide, its proportions are particularly useful. It has the presence of a traditional Victorian pedestal desk without the considerable depth of many larger examples, making it suitable for a home office, study, bedroom or living space.
The old pine surface is a particularly appealing feature. Rather than appearing overly restored, it retains the irregularities, wear, knocks and mellow colour associated with genuine antique furniture.
A highly usable piece of Victorian furniture that combines substantial storage with beautifully aged English pine.
